Charley’s Tonsorial Parlor and Rock Shop

Acrylic on canvas

Here we have a piece that was obviously commissioned, so far from my own imaginings, and a real challenge. It’s undoubtedly my style and process though, that warped looking down at things that I never mean to but always end up doing, and the drips and squiggles. What was challenging were the cupboard angles and the detail. I mean, how do you paint a shiny rock that everyone can tell it’s a rock?

Here a Manet still life has been incorporated into the home of an affluent couple, an affluence that is hinted at by the classic chesterfield where the father sleeps and the 18th century carved and gilded frame where the master painter’s piece resides.

“Here we have a classic Victorian paneling. Many of my pieces are of brick buildings so the paneling would add warmth and comfort to this home. The white wash hints that the panels are of a less luxurious wood so perhaps we are in a 20th century New England home so I’ve taken great care to replicate a Mahogany wood grain in the banisters and stairs leading this couple upstairs. Though hinting at an American influence this home would retain its Victorian influence and so reflects in the stair banister shape and style. ” – comment from the artist
